County applies for nearly $5M grant to help fund new jail

County applies for nearly $5M grant to help fund new jail Current estimate to build a new facility is $47 million View Comments ZANESVILLE - The county has applied for $4.7 million of an Ohio local jails grant to help pay for a new jail. The deadline was Wednesday.  It comes four years after a jail levy on the 2017 ballot failed. We ve needed a jail for a long time, Sheriff Matt Lutz said. Just because (the levy) was defeated, it didn t take away the need for a new jail. A current estimate to build a new facility would cost around $47 million although it could be more, Commissioner Mollie Crook said. They requested 10% of that amount, offering other ways to match the remaining 90% from other funding sources.

$100M Statehouse bill may be solution for Mosaic Tile demo

View Comments ZANESVILLE - The county might soon have the golden ticket to demolish the old Mosaic Tile Company building on Zanesville s south end. Muskingum County land bank officials have their fingers crossed as the Ohio Statehouse makes moves to fund those costly projects at a local level. The hope is that this would at least be able to give us some help, if not pay for a lot of it, Andy Roberts, executive director of the Muskingum County Land Reutilization Corporation, said at a land bank meeting Tuesday. Lawmakers want to set aside $100 million for county land reutilization programs  aka land banks  to tear down blighted structures like Mosaic. If that bill passes, land banks could apply for a portion of that money over the next two years.
