The money will be used by the cross section of private and public sector leaders who make up the Amazing Accrington board to fund studies into possible redevelopments. The funding was awarded by Hyndburn Borough Council, which hopes that the board can transform Accrington into a nationally renowned success story. Council leader Miles Parkinson OBE said: This bid is for the good of the town, and Hyndburn Borough Council have shown great support for this cross party and cross sector initiative by providing the funds to prepare a bid.

The proposals were lodged by Arndale owner the Jesta Group which believes this could be the best way to regenerate a town centre that has been struggling in recent years, with businesses hit particularly hard by the coronavirus pandemic. The firm wants a mix of housing and retail on the site and would like to redevelop remaining parts of the shopping centre. Hyndburn Council said the company is a vital stakeholder and that working with them could be key to further plans to revive the town.
