In the wake of conservative Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming s ouster from her House GOP leadership position, roughly 150 Republican or former Republican leaders who are opposed to former President Trump s continued strong grip over the GOP have signed a letter threatening to leave the party if it does not reform and return to its founding American principles.
The group s statement of principles – titled a Call for American Renewal – was unveiled Thursday. It outlines 13 principles to guide a rebirth of the American cause. We, therefore, declare our intent to catalyze an American renewal, and to either re-imagine a party dedicated to our founding ideals or else hasten the creation of such an alternative, the statement pledges.

Two of Pennsylvania’s Republican members of Congress are speaking out about their vote Wednesday to oust U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming from House leadership.
U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (PA-14) said in a statement he will support Cheney’s likely successor, U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, in part because of how she handled herself during former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial.
Trump was accused of inciting the attack by his supporters on the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6. Five people died in the attack.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and former Lehigh Valley Congressman Charlie Dent are among a group of Republicans threatening to create a new political party if the GOP continues to align with former President Donald Trump and his false claims the 2020 election was stolen.
Ridge, Dent and 150 other Republicans are part of “A Call for American Renewal,” which threatens to break from the GOP and form a third party.
The group includes former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and former ambassadors, cabinet secretaries, and Republican Party chairs.

As we ve discussed, by international standards, American voters have a choice between a center-left Democratic Party and a Republican Party that s further to the right than almost any competitive party in the Western world.
