Times Staff Report The Birmingham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated will celebrate its 90th anniversary on Friday, May 28, with a virtual anniversary gala featuring a fireside chat with April Ryan, White House Correspondent for The Grio, Political Analyst and Honorary Member, moderated by Deidra K. Diaz, Southern Regional Director of the sorority and Birmingham Alumnae Chapter member. “For the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter to be celebrating 90 years of service in the Birmingham area is a huge endeavor,” said Ellen Phillips, chapter president. “We are so excited and are honored to still be a vital pillar in the community to serve our children, as well as our adults and meet the overall needs of the community.

Today Charles Barkley solidified his status as a hometown hero after giving back to his high school alma mater. The former NBA player donated $1,000 to each of the employees of Leeds City Schools in Alabama, according to the district’s Facebook page. “Through the years, the Leeds School System has been fortunate to have the support of its biggest fan and most famous graduate, Charles Barkley, Class of 1981,” the school district wrote in a post. “Over the past three decades, Charles has quietly and without any attention drawn to himself, provided over $3million in scholarships to Leeds graduates, funds that have helped hundreds of students attend college.”

Now, he s giving back to the school s employees, too. On its Facebook page, the Leeds City Schools System said 11-time NBA All Star, who was in the class of 1981, gifted each employee in the school system $1,000 for going the extra mile this past year. Being a school employee is tough, but driving a bus, teaching, coaching, or working in the cafeteria, all while maintaining safety protocols, has been a daunting task during a worldwide pandemic.
