Food distributed to people hit by Covid outbreak, lockdown

Workers and other people in need in lockdown and other affected areas by Covid-19 are receiving food assistance from the government, trade unions and other organisations.
Phnom Penh municipal governor Khuong Sreng continues to provide people in affected areas with assistance. On April 21, the municipal administration donated food to more than 200 families in Chaom Chao II commune of the capital’s Por Sen Chey district.
“The lockdown makes people’s lives more difficult. But please be patient, understand and join the government to curb Covid-19,” he said, adding that the government ordered food to be distributed immediately to people in affected areas.

Over 100 CSOs call for debt relief

A coalition of 103 civil society organisations (CSOs) reiterated a call for the government to issue a set of guidelines for all financial institutions in Cambodia to suspend loan payments, set interest rates to zero per cent and waive accrued interest for at least three months to help borrowers during the latest Covid-19 pandemic surge.
The move would allow debtors to remain at home and stay safe during the pandemic, free of the fear of losing their land or housing over unpaid debt, according to the CSOs’ April 6 joint statement.

More aid sent to border provinces

Prime Minister Hun Sen approved the provision of more supplies and food assistance to the seven provinces bordering Thailand to meet the daily consumption needs of returning migrant workers.
Meanwhile, authorities in the border provinces are continuing to bring workers in good health to quarantine in their respective hometown rather than at centres established along the border due to crowding concerns.
The inventory of items to be provided includes mosquito nets, blankets, pillows, bedding, sarongs and scarves, 56,100 personal hygiene kits, 68,000 cases of drinking water and 29,200 cases of instant noodles.

Thai plant’s workers on strike

More than 300 Cambodian migrant workers out of a total of 3,000 employed at the GFN chicken processing factory in Nong Yai district of Thailand’s Chonburi province went on strike on the evening of March 7 after the factory terminated 32 Cambodian workers in response to their demands for better working conditions.
Yem Yot, a Cambodian working as a translator at the GFN factory, was allegedly fired due to the factory not applying for a visa extension on his behalf.

Private-sector pensions a step closer

Prime Minister Hun Sen issued a sub-decree that grants pension funds for private-sector employees who are lawful under the Labour Law in a bid to reduce poverty among the elderly and alleviate burgeoning financial burdens on the families that take care of them.
The new legislation will be effective once the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and the Ministry of Economy and Finance sign off on announcements that supplement and govern the application and implementation of the law, labour ministry spokesman Heng Sour told The Post on March 7.
Comprising 10 chapters and 40 articles, the sub-decree defines a number of mechanisms, conditions, protocols and procedures on contribution payments, accumulation rates, claims and dispersion of benefits.
