Teen arrested after SWAT standoff at Central Lubbock house

A teenager was arrested following a more than three-hour standoff with a Lubbock Police Department SWAT team late Wednesday at a house in Central Lubbock.
Jake Canales, 17, was arrested about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday on a state jail felony charge of theft of a firearm after the standoff that began when police tried to serve a warrant for his arrest on that firearms charge shortly before 8:20 p.m. at a house in the 2000 block of 60th Street, according to a statement from police.
Police say Canales refused to leave the house as officers tried to arrest him on the weapons charge, prompting a SWAT and Hostage Negotiator Team to respond.
Man sentenced to 25 years in prison for role in 2017 game room robbery
Jurors in the 137th District Court deliberated for about two hours before returning with a 25-year prison sentence against a 33-year-old man for his role in the 2017 armed robbery of a Central Lubbock game room.
David Delce, who did not testify during his trial, faced a punishment of 15 years to life in prison after jurors last week convicted him of a first-degree felony count of aggravated robbery.
Delce s charge stems from a Dec. 31, 2017, armed robbery of a game room in the 3500 block of Slide Road as employees were leaving for the night.
Police seek clues about Lubbock man found dead on roadway
Police are asking for public help to learn what lead up to a 47-year-old man being found dead Friday night in the middle of a Central Lubbock thoroughfare.
John David Wishert was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after his body was reported about 10:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the 3000 block of University Avenue, according to a statement from police.
Lubbock police had responded to a call for service indicating a man had been found in the roadway. Following the administration of life-saving measures by EMS, the man was pronounced dead and later identified as Wishert.
Third defendant in 2017 Picantes Restaurant robbery found guilty
A 29-year-old man faces up to life in prison after he was convicted by a jury for his role in the armed robbery of a Central Lubbock restaurant four years ago.
Jurors in the 364th District Court deliberated for two and 1/2 hours before returning with their verdict finding 29-year-old Phillip Velazquez guilty as charged of aggravated robbery for his role in the Jan. 27, 2017, armed robbery at Picantes restaurant in the 3800 block of 34th Street.
Velazquez is the final defendant to be convicted in the robbery. His brother, Joseph Gonzalez, was sentenced in 2019 to 60 years in prison for his role in the robbery. Damian Villarreal, who testified against Gonzalez, pleaded guilty in September in exchange for a 30-year prison sentence.
Lubbock police and EMS responded to a shooting in the 1500 block of 41st Street. Officials with the Lubbock Police Department say one person has died and three others were injured in what they’re calling a home invasion.
