FDA destroys unwholesome products in C/R

Graphic Online BY: Shirley Asiedu-Addo 705 The Central Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has disposed of unwholesome goods worth GH¢214,000. The items which included food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, chemical substances and mechanical devices  were disposed of at the Nkanfoa landfill site last Friday. The goods, all weighing about 2.3 tonnes, were seized from routine market surveillance activities in warehouses, pharmacies and supermarkets between June and December last year and others submitted voluntarily to the offices of the FDA for safe disposal. The Central Regional Director of the FDA, Mr John Odai-Tettey, told the media that the FDA was working in the interest of consumers and was, therefore, committed to ensuring that sales outlets sold only wholesome goods to the public.

FDA logo The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has cautioned the public to rigorously examine products being sold at ridiculously low prices before buying them. Buyers must check expiry dates and quality standards in order not to compromise their health and safety. Mr. John Odai-Tettey, Central Regional Director of the Authority, gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Cape Coast, said it was not enough to only check the expiry dates of products. “The storage conditions of products, packaging among others must all be ascertained before buying,” he further cautioned. Consumers were also encouraged to stay away from products displayed directly under the sun especially oil and canned products and report any unregistered and suspected fake product to the Authority.

In collaboration with other stakeholders, the GTA said it would not hesitate to apply the law to the latter if managers of tourism facilities were found blatantly disregarding the COVID-19 protocols. Mr. Kwame Gyasi, Central Regional Director of GTA, who gave the caution in an interview with the Ghana News Agency expressed concern about the open disregard for COVID-19 protocols in some tourism facilities and public places. He told patrons and management of tourism facilities to ensure visitors observed COVID-19 protocols at their facilities, displayed ‘no nose mask no entry’ signs, ensured people washed their hands, and observed social distancing rules effectively.

I didn’t know NADMO existed until my appointment as Director – Joe Donkor The Central Regional Director of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr Joseph Kwame Donkor has revealed that until he was appointed into his current position, he never knew the organization even existed in Ghana. “I have to be very honest about this. When I was told that I was going to be appointed at NADMO, I said which institution was that. To be frank, I have never heard about them because they were not really active and vibrant as compared to what we’ve achieved currently.” He revealed.
