COVID-19 dominates year

Reminiscing on the past 12 months, the most significant of events glaring back is clearly COVID-19 and how it has upended life as we know it.
Whether it s been health scares, shutdowns or mask mandates, the pandemic has forced everyone to reimagine how to function safely from a distance.
The year began as usual, with news of new business coming and a church marked its centennial.
January (Pre-COVID-19)
• A formal sentencing hearing took place for defendant Byron James Shepard, 38, of Okemah, convicted in the 2017 murder of Tecumseh Police Officer Justin Terney. On the felony count of murder in the first degree, the death sentence was issued to Shepard.
Week ends with both indices up 1%
The Colombo stock market celebrated Christmas in advance soaring to a 41-month high amidst healthy turnover and play on select blue chips.
The All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed at 6,685.64 up 56.62 points (+0.85%) while the more liquid S&P SL20 index closed at 2,599.67 up 24.94 points (+0.97%). Turnover was Rs. 2.7 billion. The ASPI gained 68.69 points (+1.04%) during the week while the S&P SL20 gained 26.72 points (+1.04%). Turnover averaged Rs. 3.47 billion, improving from Rs. 2.87 billion last week, according to Asia Securities.
First Capital said the market experienced a 41-month high reverting the direction to positive while recording the highest intraday gain after two and half weeks.

The American Red Cross conducts blood drives in the west central area. To give blood you must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. You can give blood every 56 days. Double red cells can be donated every 112 days. While all blood types are needed, type O and type B-negative donors are especially encouraged to give.
