Labour shortage looms for restaurants, hotels amid B C s restart plan

VICTORIA The first full day of B.C.’s reopening on Wednesday brought diners inside, and more revenue for restaurants, but also new challenges not enough staff to cook for and serve potential customers. At the Brentwood Bay Resort, they have no problem retaining staff, but are frantically trying to hire more says manager Natasha Richardson. “It’s just a non-stop recruiting shortage. We re just not getting the volume of staff that we need,” she said Wednesday from the resort’s pub, which was busy with customers. “It’s such a challenge that my housekeeping manager and my executive chief are actually afraid,” she said. “They re feeling deep fear.”

Central Saanich residents rally to welcome supportive housing development

VICTORIA A group of about a dozen residents gathered Tuesday to show their support for a supportive housing facility under construction in Central Saanich. The BC Housing initiative will create 39 permanent homes for people experiencing homelessness in Greater Victoria, plus 51 affordable rental units. The Prosser Road facility will also provide support for people living with addictions and mental health issues. “There are people who are suffering from mental health and addiction who need a place to stabilize,” said Central Saanich resident and rally organizer Jim Rondeau. “They need a place to live long term near their friends and families and this might be a great place for them to be.”

Central Saanich stepfather sentenced to nine months in jail for sexual touching

As he imposed sentence Friday, provincial court Judge Maryland McKimm called the accused’s actions vile and a betrayal of the trust of all parents. “Nine months in custody is a fit and proper sentence to announce to the community that we will not tolerate this behaviour and we will impose harsh sentences to those who prey on their children, even in ways that could be described as physically less invasive,” said McKimm. The man had been married to the victim’s mother for several years and was stepfather to her four children, whom he professed to love. He knew that his wife had fled from an abusive husband and was well aware his stepchildren had been violated by their father. He knew they were vulnerable to further acts of violence and sexual predation as a result of that traumatic experience, said McKimm.
