The SCVAL Board of Managers voted to allow eligible teams to participate in Central Coast Section playoffs during a special meeting Friday by a vote of 11 yes, one no and two abstentions. A second motion to recognize league champions failed, though individual schools are allowed to recognize teams. That vote was by a 10-4 margin.

SH Prep own the pool at WBAL boys and girls swimming finals

On the boys side, Gunn (6-6) earned the seventh seed and Sacred Heart Prep (6-5) qualified and will play Monday at Homestead (6-7). Menlo (9-0) earned a bye into the second round and will host the winner of Harker (3-4) at Lynbrook (7-3) on Wednesday afternoon. The Titans will host a second-round match against either Westmont (6-2) or Aragon (5-5). A total of nine SCVAL teams, who only learned Friday they were eligible to participate, were selected for the tournament, with Cupertino (9-1) the highest seed at No. 3. The finals are slated for May 27, likely at the home of the higher seed.

Gunn boys get upper hand in water polo rivalry with Palo Alto

Princeton-bound Kate Mallery scored twice, recorded three steals and made two field blocks. Kenza Ashworth and Sawyer McKenna also scored. Freshman Nina Albers was a big presence for Gunn. She had two assists and a team-leading six steals. Senior co-captain Molly Wilkinson also had two assists and two steals. Goalie Jayden Kratt recorded nine saves for the Titans, who travel to play Homestead on Thursday. Castilleja beat visiting Los Altos, 13-7, in another SCVAL contest. Annika Burns led the Gators with four goals while Elsa McElhinney, Sydney Lowell, and Anjali Kambham each added a pair. Gabby Lewis, Talula Seale and Georgia Hutchinson also scored.
