Local ILEARN scores drop in most districts

INDIANAPOLIS — After school years disrupted by COVID-19, most educators expected standardized test scores to suffer. That panned out, both statewide and locally as most school districts saw passing rates for Indiana’s ILEARN test drop in 2021, with some districts losing 10 percentage points or more compared to their 2019 figures. To start with, ILEARN has never had good passing rates — the wide majority of students in Indiana don’t pass both math and English portions of the standardized test, which is given to students in grade 3-8 as well as high school sophomores. Statewide, the 2021 passing rate for both portions of the test dropped to 28.6%, a sharp decrease from 37.1% passing rate in the 2019 testing season.

New owners resurrecting county s only bowling alley

KENDALLVILLE — Two Albion businessmen are hoping their latest venture will resurrect bowling in Noble County. The county’s only bowling alley, 10 Pinz Pizza & Arcade in Kendallville, closed for good in March 2021. The closure left bowlers, teams and leagues looking elsewhere for bowling alleys, all of which are outside Noble County. Business partners Doug Ebey and Andrew McGill acquired the 10 Pinz space in May and have begun a major remodel. Ebey and McGill are going for a modern look to the renovated alley, with new flooring and LED lighting over the lanes. The businessmen are doing most of the demolition work themselves and testing the performance of the lane equipment to determine what may need repairs.

East Noble completes hearing on superintendent contract

KENDALLVILLE — In a public hearing on East Noble’s proposed new superintendent contract, no one showed up, leading to a record-short special meeting Tuesday night. With the short hearing down, it’s paved the way for the board to approve the contract next week and get a new superintendent officially hired. East Noble is in the process of replacing Superintendent Ann Linson, who opted to retire effective June 30 after 11 years leading the district. East Noble offered Linson an interim extension into July at a rate of $650 per day, since the district is not yet completed with the process of hiring its next leader.

Brown is top citizen

ALBION — On a day when the Albion Rotary Club announced a back-to-normal meeting schedule, it chose to honor someone in the community who does so much more than normal. Albion Rotarian Joy LeCount introduced Jason Brown, 43, as the club’s Citizen of the Year during Thursday’s luncheon gathering at the Albion Pizza Depot. “I was surprised,” Brown said. “I was shocked. It feels awesome.” LeCount had invited Brown to speak at Thursday’s meeting under the guise of a program involving Brown’s work with the Indiana Deaf Camp. Brown and LeCount did do that program — and it was a big reason LeCount said Brown was deserving of the honor.
