The recently named America East Coach of The Year joined TML to clear up some stories of her past, and talk UMaine hoops history, and the upcoming semifinals.
Red Gendron On Returning From 27-Day Layoff
University of Maine hockey coach Red Gendron joined The Drive on Wednesday and admitted it s been difficult for his program to play catch-up in their return to action following nearly a month without games.
The Black Bears returned to the ice last weekend and suffered losses of 4-2 and 3-0, albeit against the #1 ranked team in the country, B.C.
This weekend, Maine heads to Storrs, Connecticut to take on a UCONN program that will be playing its 20th and 21st games of the season, compared to just the 13th and 14th on the year for the Black Bears.
Maine basketball fans have seen Amy Vachon from her playing days at Cony High School, to her time wearing a UMaine uniform, to becoming a high school coach and winning titles at what was known as Mcauley high school in southern Maine, to joining the Black Bears women s coaching staff and becoming the UMaine head coach and winning conference titles, and leading the Bears to another regular season conference championship this year.
But there are some stories you may not know about and Tim Throckmorton uncovered those. Well two of them anyway. One of them he made up completely.
Can you figure out which ones are true and which one is false?
Rene Cloukey, the Sports Director at WAGM in Presque Isle, joined The Drive for Wednesday s edition of Tourney 2020 Rewind.
Cloukey embodies many an Aroostook County folk who feel a great emptiness with no tournament played this winter. Cloukey, like many from The County, makes the trip to Bangor every third week of February and posts up at the Cross Insurance Center, watching basketball morning-to-evening for 10-days straight (save for Sunday, of course).
Cloukey said the cancellation of this year s tournament, coupled with the inability to pack local gyms and cheer on their school s teams, has many people in The County struggling to find different sources of entertainment.
UMaine A.D. Gives Radio Tour Of $110mil Plan
Ken Ralph, who began his day by unveiling the ambitious $110-million athletics facilities plan for the University of Maine, ended it by appearing on The Drive to walk the listeners through what is in store over the next several years on the Orono campus.
To see the visuals of the various projects, and grasp the vast scope of the project s undertaking, check out the renderings provided at GoBlackBears.com.
Ralph walked us through the vision for each of the improvements which will provide state-of-the-art facilities to each of the 17 varsity programs on campus.
