SOUTH PARIS – Robert “Bob” L. Berube, 78, passed away Jan. 26, 2021 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris after several years of declining health and complications of COVID-19. Robert was born Nov. 4, 1942 to Joseph and Fleurette (Pelletier) Berube of Auburn. He attended Lewiston/Auburn schools graduating from Lewiston High School in 1960. He enlisted in the Army National Guard Reserves after high school, attending training at Fort Benning, Ga. and graduating from Maine Military Academy as a commissioned officer in 1967. His reserve military career included PTL Leader, Executive Officer, Company Commander, SR Instructor, Operations Coordinator, Communications Specialist and Intelligence Administration. WATERVILLE – Joan “Jo” Gottardi, 88, a Waterville native, passed peacefully shrouded in the arms of our Lord on Jan. 18, 2021. Jo was born on July 29, 1932 to George (Rahen) Elias and Sadie (Mitchell) Elias. The oldest of three children, Jo served as the leader, taking on her role as the eldest child to her two brothers Donnie and Bobby. On Nov. 7, 1954, she married the love of her life, then-Capt. Carl E. Gottardi, at St. Joseph Maronite Church with full military honors. After their marriage, Jo and Carl, spent time abroad in Germany while Carl served with the 3rd Armored Division. During their time in Germany, they travelled throughout Europe where Jo thrived as a military wife, relishing the complexities of entertaining military officers and wives. SCARBOROUGH – Donal Leon Staples of Scarborough, passed away on Jan. 9, 2021 at Maine Veterans’ Homes of Scarborough, his home for nearly two years. He formerly lived in Falmouth for 16 years. Donal was born on Sept. 22, 1927 in Plymouth, Mass. and raised in nearby Marshfield where he and his wife Elaine later raised five children. Donal was a Brant Rock lobsterman and Elaine taught 3rd and 4th grades in Marshfield. They retired in 1985, and moved first to Parsonsfield and then Holmes Beach, Fla. where Elaine passed away in 1997.
Maine delegation united on bill to help veterans with early-stage dementia
The measure, which is on its way to President Trump to be signed into law, would relax eligibility rules that have stopped some veterans from receiving care at state-run veterans homes.

Members of Maine’s congressional delegation are backing legislation to address a gap that prevents some veterans with early stage dementia from getting care at Maine Veterans’ Homes.
The measure, passed unanimously by both the House and Senate and co-authored by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine and Angus King, I-Maine, along with Reps. Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden, both Democrats, is part of a bipartisan bill to improve benefits for veterans.
