Curtis earns Madison’s MPA Award

Susannah Curtis of Madison, a senior at Madison Area Memorial High School, has been selected to receive the 2021 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Throughout her years at Madison High, Curtis has distinguished herself in the classroom, on the playing field, and as a leader in the school and the community, according to her school. She will graduate as the valedictorian for the class of 2021 and plans to attend the University of Southern Maine to study secondary education with a concentration in history and social studies.

Westbrook High School senior Heidi Huynh has been selected to receive a 2021 Principal’s Award sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association.
The award is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Huynh, an AP student, member of multiple clubs, hospital volunteer, avid snowboarder and painter, said she was “honored to receive the award,” which puts her in the running for one of 10 $1,000 scholarships to be awarded this week.

JAY Drew Delaney of Livermore, a senior at Spruce Mountain High School, has been selected to receive the 2021 Principal’s Award.
The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Throughout his years at Spruce Mountain High School, Delaney has distinguished himself in the classroom, on the playing field, and as a leader in the school and the community, Principal Thomas Plourde said when making the award.
Delaney, Plourde and other award winners and their principals will participate in a live virtual scholarship drawing event on Friday, May 14. Ten $1,000 scholarships will be drawn in the names of former Maine principals and MPA Executive Directors Horace McGowan, Richard Tyler, and Richard Durost.
Principals, health orgs oppose bid for Maine trans sport ban

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Health and education associations in Maine have testified against a proposal that would stop transgender students from participating in girls sports.
A group of Republicans led by Rep. Beth O Connor, of Berwick, proposed the ban, which is called “Act Act To Ban Biological Males From Participating In Women s Sports.” The proposal states that a banned student can dispute the decision with a signed statement from a doctor that they are female based on “internal and external reproductive anatomy,” natural level of testosterone or a chromosomal analysis.
