Commission holds virtual ‘Poetry Out Loud’ state finals Gorham High’s Emily Paruk was named state champion; local finalists included Hazel Dow, Katelyn Nestor, Zeke Sitarz and Rose Tuttle. Share In the first-ever statewide “Poetry Out Loud” competition held earlier this year – in which poetry recitations were recorded and scored by a panel of virtual judges – 10 students rose through the ranks of schoolwide and regional competitions to compete in the Maine state final, presented by the Maine Arts Commission. The Maine poetry finalists included Emma Collins, North Yarmouth Academy; Hazel Dow, Waterville Senior High School; Katelyn Nestor, Gardiner Area High School; Emily Paruk, Gorham High School; Zeke Sitarz, Lisbon; Sofia Stockwell, North Haven Community School; Helen Strout, Cape Elizabeth High School; Rose Tuttle, Mount Ararat High School, Topsham; Ada Vancil, John Bapst Memorial High School, Bangor; and Magnolia Vandiver, George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill.

As part of that folk trio, he sang to more than 200,000 people during the 1963 civil rights march on Washington, D.C., where Martin Luther King Jr. also delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. As The Pretty Reckless tops the charts, singer Taylor Momsen makes herself home on midcoast Momsen has been spending more time at her home in Maine, where her band also recorded its recent album, Death by Rock and Roll. Photo courtesy of Fearless Records During some really dark periods in her life, singer Taylor Momsen has turned to Maine for light and hope. She first started on a downward emotional spiral – drinking too much, not devoting as much energy to her music as she wanted to – in 2017 after the suicide of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, a personal musical hero of hers.  Momsen’s rock band, The Pretty Reckless, was on tour with Soundgarden when Cornell died. To try to refocus and recover from the shock, Momsen retreated to her home on the midcoast.
