The first thing you need to know about the inimitable Detective Kubu is the origin of his name. Kubu is Setswana for hippopotamus and even though it’s an accurate indication of his size and appetite, Kubu is neither as dangerous nor as aggressive as his animal counterpart. Circuit Judge Brittany Grayson, appointed to the bench in 2019, issued her decision after hearing closing arguments that followed a daylong evidentiary hearing earlier in the month. The teen is charged with eight counts of first-degree reckless injury punishable by up to 15 years in prison for adults  and being a minor with a gun, a misdemeanor. He has been held in secure detention since his arrest Nov. 22. Because he has been adjudicated delinquent before, and is now facing felony charges, the public and news media can have limited access to his hearings.
