Clementine Jacoby combats recidivism through nonprofit Recidiviz

Clementine Jacoby ’15 (Photo courtesy of Clementine Jacoby) on January 27, 2021 Clementine Jacoby ’15 is using data to reduce recidivism rates and encourage an equitable criminal justice system through her nonprofit, Recidiviz.   Recidiviz works to standardize data across prisons, probation and parole systems to aid informed decision-making in the hopes of reducing incarceration rates and creating a fairer criminal justice system.  Amid COVID-19, Recidiviz has worked with 30 states to demonstrate the possible influence the virus may have on staff and the incarcerated community by assisting to prevent predicted outbreaks. Ultimately, states that utilized Recidiviz’s resources released approximately 40,000 people early; in North Dakota alone, the state’s prison population decreased by 25% in one month.

In Oneida County they have taken about 1,000 calls just since last Monday. They are so busy, they have expanded their helpline hours to seven days a week. Director Michael Romano says it s heartbreaking to hear the voices on the other end, people feel helpless and lost, some with no family members or friends with computers to help them.

Prosecutors Are at Loggerheads with Their New Boss, George Gascón The union that represents local prosecutors filed suit against the new DA earlier this week On Wednesday afternoon, a judge ordered Los Angeles County’s new District Attorney, George Gascón, to show why the court shouldn’t block criminal-justice reforms he has issued in the weeks since taking office on December 7—reforms county prosecutors say ignore or violate state law. The order by L.A. Superior Court Judge David Cowan was in response to a lawsuit that the union representing county prosecutors filed against Gascón earlier that day. At issue is a series of executive actions Gascón issued that bar prosecutors from charging criminal sentencing enhancements under the Three Strikes Law and direct them to withdraw all pre-existing enhancement allegations for factors like gang affiliation or possession of a firearm.
