Key progressive initiatives stall in Congress as some on the left urge Biden to go bold, and go alone
Updated 12:04 AM ET, Sat May 22, 2021 (CNN)As President Joe Biden pursues his quest for a bipartisan legislative victory and Congress winds down before the Memorial Day holiday, some of the top legislative priorities for progressives are stalling in Washington as Democrats hopes for big bold changes collide with the limits of what Biden can achieve under a deeply divided government.
The gulf between progressive ambition and the legislative reality means there is all-but-certain friction ahead between Biden and the restive liberal wing of his party, which united behind him after he defeated Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders during the Democratic presidential primary and marshaled their forces to help the party flip two US Senate seats in Georgia, giving Democrats control of that chamber.

A new analysis from the International Energy Agency (IEA) says supply chains for the elements that make green tech possible copper, lithium, cobalt, and nickel aren t being developed outside of China to meet the growing demand. For example, IEA projects lithium demand for the electric vehicle revolution will be 40 times larger by 2040 than it is today.

The operators of the Dakota Access Pipeline on Thursday said in a filing that it will ask the Supreme Court to take up lower court rulings that found the pipeline is operating without a necessary permit.
A Washington appeals court had previously backed the plaintiffs in a lawsuit brought by Native American groups, agreeing the project required a full-scale environmental review. In the Thursday filing in the lower court, lawyers for the energy company asked for the pipeline to be allowed to operate while the nation’s highest court considers it.
“A stay would preserve the status quo, retaining jurisdiction in this Court to consider a potential request for relief from vacatur while the Supreme Court considers the forthcoming petition,” lawyers said in the filing obtained by Bloomberg Law.
