Miss Universe Canada org speaks up on gown controversy involving Filipino designers

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 25) The Miss Universe Canada organization has apologized to Filipino designers Michael Cinco and Rian Fernandez following a series of controversies about their work experience with the group.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, MUC aired its side about the issue and apologized to Cinco and Fernandez for any damage these recent incidents have caused to them or their brand. We strive to ensure our designer partners such as Michael Cinco and Rian Fernandez are always aware of our gratitude for their tremendous support, it said.

This is what the beauty pageant organization said on their recent Instagram post referring to Dubai-based Filipino renowned Fashion designer Michael Cinco’s complaint about Miss Universe Canada 2020 Nova Stevens, MGmode’s Migüel Martinez and Denis Martin Davila, and Miss Universe Canada organization.

According to the beauty queen, she doesn’t usually dignify drama or hate with a response because she believes in peace and love as food for soul. However, because she continues to receive messages of hate, she felt the need to clarify a few things.
Among others, Nova shared how designers and pageant contestants enter into sponsorship agreements regularly.
“Just as they do at award shows or any other public event, it’s not ‘free.’ It involves an immense amount of effort+ negotiation on both sides,” she said.
“SPONSORSHIP IS NOT CHARITY; it is an agreement to lend a gown to a public figure in return for PR, publicity and safe return of the gown.”
Miss Universe Canada organization apologized to two Filipino designers who previously aired their negative experiences working with them in the international pageant scene.
As of writing, the official Facebook page of the pageant organization can no longer be accessed after it posted the statement on Tuesday morning, May 24 (Philippine time).
The statement is still accessible on its official website. Some pageant Facebook pages also shared it on their accounts.
The organization initially explained that they value the MUC titleholder’s “input and comfortability” in the designs they commit to.
“We do not commit to any specific design for any specific event; instead we collaborate with the reigning MUC titleholder, and based on her input and comfortability in each outfit we decide which outfit to wear at which event. As a result of that, we are not able to wear all of the beautiful designs sent to us,” they said.
