Thatcher presents âsword of honourâ in 1980 PRIME Minister Margaret Thatcher represented the Queen at Sandhurst’s Royal Military Academy in the spring of 1980, to inspect cadets during the Sovereign’s Parade. After making the inspection Mrs Thatcher told the assembled officers and cadets: “This is a great day for me as well as all of you, because it gives me the chance to pay tribute to our armed forces for their dedication, discipline and devotion to duty.” Not wanting to break with tradition the Prime Minister presented a ‘sword of honour’ to the best cadet of the intake, and this went to Junior Under Officer Simon King, aged 22, who then went on to serve with the Royal Engineers.
