Medical insurers have demanded clarity around a government plan to indemnify any GP legally implicated by an adverse reaction to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, as doctors are asked to weigh up risks for under 50s.
Four major medical indemnity firms - Avant, MIGA, MIPS and MDA National - wrote to federal Health Minister Greg Hunt on Monday night seeking information about how legal risk for GPs administering the AstraZeneca vaccine would be managed.

Mr Hunt has said doctors are covered by a federal government indemnity scheme if a patient developed blood clots as a result of the vaccine after the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommended people aged under 50 should receive the Pfizer shot instead of the AstraZeneca one last week.
