By the 1930s, millions of acres of Florida land were devastated by clear-cutting, poor farming practices, and phosphate mining. Many small farmers were destitute, and unemployment was widespread. Senior curator Michelle Hearn discusses the role of the Civilian Conservation Corps in massive reforestation efforts, the establishment of the Florida state park system, and infrastructure projects. About 40,000 young men would serve in Floridaâs CCC units, allowing them to support their families during the Depression.

New scientific and economic research for the Andrews government warns of the grave risk of rising seas along the Victorian coast including trillions of dollars of damage to homes and other assets, if global warming is not slowed and planned for.
The research will add pressure on the government to further restrict development on the coast by lifting its current sea level rise planning benchmark of 0.8 metres by 2100, and to start planning for the “retreat” of some low-lying coastal towns.

Patrick Robert Dragon –
Patrick Robert Dragon, 50, died on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at Hartford Hospital after a courageous battle against COVID-19.
He was born in Putnam, Conn., December 29, 1970, son of Robert and Ann Marie (Bernier) Dragon.
A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Conn., Patrick was a 1989 graduate of Killingly High School. He was also a graduate of Norwich Technical School, having studied in the Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Program. For several years Patrick was an EMT with American Ambulance in Griswold, Conn. Patrick was a proud member of the 107th Training Troop and entered the Connecticut State Police Training Academy in January 1998. Upon graduation from the Academy, Patrick served his community as a patrol trooper at Troop D in Danielson, Conn., a Resident Trooper in the town of Sterling, Conn., and a Major Crime Unit Detective.
