CMA warns firms over price-fixing of supplies to disabled students

Date Time CMA warns firms over price-fixing of supplies to disabled students The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has sent advisory letters to a number of firms, reminding them of their obligations under competition law, after learning of allegations that some suppliers colluded over the price of key services and equipment. Price-fixing is a serious breach of competition law and can cheat people out of a lower price, which could have been available if competition was working properly. Disabled students who are eligible can receive funding through the Disabled Student Allowances grant scheme, managed by the Student Loans Company (SLC), which acts on behalf of the UK and Welsh governments’ education departments. Under the current system, an independent needs assessor will provide SLC with recommendations for products and services along with quotations from suppliers, and SLC will work with the student to put the support in place.

Construction supply cartel fined £15m for price fixing PA 17 December 2020, 7:51 am Two suppliers to some of Britain’s biggest building firms have been fined £15 million by the UK competition watchdog for price fixing. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it had fined Vp more than £11.2 million and MGF (Trench Construction Systems) £3.8 million after an investigation found they colluded over prices for nearly two years. The UK firms supply excavation groundworks products to some of the nation’s largest construction companies for projects such as housing developments, roadworks, railway line works and water pipe upgrades. A third groundworks company, Mabey Hire, took part in the collusion for five months but has not been fined as the firm brought the illegal activity to the CMA’s attention and has co-operated with the investigation.
