Didi Gregorius signed a one-year deal with the Phillies last winter, then earned his money batting .284 with 10 homers and a team-best 40 RBI while playing all 60 games.AP

No surprise there. That’s not the free-agent shortstop’s style.
In a roundabout way, Gregorius made it clear that he’d welcome re-signing with the Yankees after one standout season playing for Joe Girardi again in Philadelphia if the Yankees fail to bring back second baseman DJ LeMahieu and jump to a backup plan. That would include moving shortstop Gleyber Torres back to second base and hunting for a new shortstop . or maybe an old shortstop.

Give the Yankees credit for trotting out two of their heavy hitters this week to answer questions about – who else? – DJ LeMahieu. Via Zoom, Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone tried to calm fans’ fears that the lineup’s best hitter is slipping through the Yankees’ fingers. But neither the GM nor the manager could honestly say there’s a breakthrough on the horizon, either.
