The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II
As I watched the progress of Pope Francis in Iraq last month and his wonderful rapport with the Muslim leaders of that country, I could not but help see a parallel between his peace-making efforts and the peace brokered between the crusader Emperor Frederick II and the sultan of Egypt, Al Kamil, recounted in Ernst Kantorovicz’s recently republished biography of Frederick Hohenstaufen.
It’s ironic that Frederick can now be seen in parallel with a modern pope. At the time, even though he had won back Jerusalem for Christians for a ten-year period – and was duly crowned its king – he had been excommunicated by the reigning Pope.

The company was founded in a barn in Eliot, Maine, in 1989 as Piscataqua Coffee Roasting Co. by Michael Kirk. He was an early foodie and a pet peeve of his was getting a poorly-prepared or stale cup of coffee, especially following a fine meal. This prompted him to start roasting himself and eventually go into business to share his passion for great coffee. In 1996, his health started to fail, and Mike partnered with his brother Bill Coneys to continue the dream of providing freshly roasted, excellent coffee to everyone. The dashboard categorizes reform recommendations into four categories based on their progress toward completion, but does not reveal how each reform is being accomplished. The dashboard which was last updated October 28, 2020, less than a month after being launched shows 42% of reform recommendations were completed.
But Matter has only been able to verify 19 of the 43 of those recommendations, excluding recommendations that focus on maintaining policies or changing personnel, rather than policy changes.
Of the 80 Safety Commission recommendations, 26 were shown as “Completed” on the dashboard, but only two were immediately verifiable. CPD has so far failed to provide verification of the other 24.
