Groton While Town Councilor Aundré Bumgardner, the Democratic nominee, and Mayor Keith Hedrick, a Democrat and incumbent who is running as a write-in candidate, are vying to be the city’s mayor for the next term, the races for City Council and city clerk are uncontested in the city’s general election on Monday, May 3. The Democratic slate features mostly incumbents for City Council and a new city clerk, as City Clerk Debra Patrick is slated to retire after more than two decades of service. The City of Groton Republican Committee did not endorse a slate of candidates, citing concerns over  a hostile and threatening environment for GOP candidates.

Lobdell, widely applauded for creating one of the most successful community sailing programs in the country, is this year’s Citizen of the Year, an award bestowed by the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce and considered by many to be the highest honor for business leaders in the two-state region. Established in 1957, the award recognizes the “outstanding leadership” and the “exceptional contributions” made by award-winners to the greater Westerly-Stonington region. In selecting the person to honor each year, chamber members consider qualities like community leadership, integrity and creativity. Candidates must also possess “strong communication skills and broad social perspectives,” said Chamber President Lisa Konicki in a statement announcing the award.Â

Democratic nominee Bumgardner and Hedrick, the city s Democratic mayor for the past two terms who is making a write-in bid after losing the March Democratic primary to Bumgardner by five votes, both are seeking to lead the city. No Republican has entered the race. The two candidates outlined their priorities for the city. The post-COVID recovery, fiscal prudence and addressing climate change are Bumgardner s top priorities, while Hedrick named responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic development and continuing community policing.
