Warning: If you get a 1099-g form, and you’ve never applied for unemployment, you may be a victim of fraud elisfkc2 / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0     CHICAGO (WBBM) A heads-up for potential fraud victims this tax season – if you get a 1099-G form in the mail, but you never applied for unemployment benefits, someone else may have in your name. CBS 2’s Tara Molina on Tuesday investigated the next steps you should take. She talked to an expert and asked how the state is preparing to handle such a situation. Since March 1, the Illinois Department of Employment Security has stopped 962,000 fraudulent unemployment claims, according to the agency’s spokeswoman.

Florida Starts Paying Out Extra $300 Unemployment Benefit

Sal Gatanio says he lost his job in April, and has dealt with financial hardship since then, like so many facing unemployment during the pandemic. “At first, with the $600 extra that the government gave out with the pandemic unemployment assistance, that was great,” he said. “Once that stopped in the end of July, for the past six months, it’s just been brutal.” He says he felt some relief Thursday after seeing the first Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payment of $300 pop into his account. “I have a smile on my face now,” he said. “For the past couple of weeks, I really have not had a smile on my face.”
