Tragedy in our backyard: GFR deploys members to Surfside for search and rescue efforts Briana Nespral Another body was recovered Tuesday afternoon bringing the total to 12 people confirmed dead after the partial building collapse in Surfside. 149 are still unaccounted for. As search and rescue efforts continue, members of Gainesville Fire Rescue have been deployed to assist.  No one s planning for that, said Mike Steele, Gainesville Fire Rescue District Chief.  Instantly you think of the resources that they re going to need and being in our profession, the amount of work and personnel required to accomplish a task like that. Eight members of Gainesville Fire Rescue were deployed as part of Florida s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 8. For them, it’s an honor to be able to help with rescue efforts.
