Dodgers nearing trade for Nationals Scherzer, Turner: Reports

The Washington Nationals are entering what appears to be a full rebuild. General manager Mike Rizzo vowed to be aggressive whichever way he opted to play Friday’s trade deadline buying or selling but with the Nationals 7.5 games back of the National League East, the decision became clearer. And while starter Max Scherzer, on the final year of his contract, appeared a likely trade candidate, star shortstop Trea Turner appears to be joining Scherzer in a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers are approaching a deal for the two Washington stars as the deadline nears, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, in what will yield a large prospect return. Rizzo had said in a radio interview Wednesday that he wants to retool the team for additional championship runs, but the inclusion of Turner in a deal casts doubt over Washington’s immediate ability to contend for another World Series.

Nationals send Kyle Schwarber to Red Sox for minor league pitcher

Across three minor league seasons, Ramirez has a 2.72 ERA with 112 strikeouts and 27 walks in 27 games, 26 of which were starts. Schwarber was one of the Nationals’ hottest hitters before he strained his hamstring. He clubbed 16 homers in a stretch of 18 games before his early July injury, but he’s been working his way back to fitness. With an American League team, he could be a prime candidate to slot in as a designated hitter. The Padres are receiving Washington’s best late-inning reliever, and the Nationals already moved closer Brad Hand to the Toronto Blue Jays earlier Thursday. Hudson has a 2.20 ERA in 32 2/3 innings this year, mostly in high-leverage situations.
