Bismarck church leading community prayer action for rain; drought worsens in North Dakota

TRAVIS SVIHOVEC and BLAKE NICHOLSON Bismarck Tribune Leaders of a Bismarck church last Sunday morning took the first steps in organizing a communitywide prayer effort aimed at ending the state’s drought, which continues to worsen. The timing of that message may have helped their cause. “It was very powerful as we first told folks here at McCabe that, it was raining outside,” said Karl Kroger, lead pastor at McCabe United Methodist Church. Some members of the church after discussing the drought on social media approached the church’s leadership about praying for rain and inviting other congregations to do the same. Kroger and Associate Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck Orr liked the idea, and this week through personal invitations and emails they re asking other churches to join.

Bismarck Park Board tables rail bridge discussion for up to 6 months

The Bismarck Park Board on Thursday tabled for up to six months a request from railroad preservation group Friends of the Rail Bridge to join its public-private partnership, citing unknown financial responsibility. The nonprofit presented to the park board at its meeting last month, but the board did not make a decision because two members were absent. Earlier this month, the Burleigh County Commission withdrew from a fledgling partnership with the Friends group because of liability and financial concerns. Friends of the Rail Bridge wants to stop BNSF Railway from demolishing the 138-year-old Bismarck-Mandan Rail Bridge spanning the Missouri River to make way for a new structure. The preservation group and railroad signed an agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard in January outlining paths to either keeping or removing the bridge. The Coast Guard decides on projects proposed along that part of the Missouri River to “ensure the structure does not unreasonably affect

Coronavirus variants continue rise in North Dakota, might be contributing to case spike

More contagious coronavirus variants are becoming established in North Dakota, with the number of confirmed variant cases doubling this month. The state lab has now identified 79 total cases of four variants 50 of the one first identified in the United Kingdom, 28 of the two California variants and one of the South African variant, according to Kirby Kruger, director of the Health Department s Disease Control Division. Those types of variants all are on the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s list of  variants of concern   a threat level in the middle of variants of interest and variants of high consequence. There are three in the low category and none in the high.
