Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland Memphis Police Director choice decision

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said Tuesday that he would choose a new police director sometime in the next two weeks, but did not give a firm timeline beyond that.  The mayor said the city continues to cull documents related to out-of-town candidates. The diligence shows, at least, that the city is heavily weighing bringing in an outsider to run the Memphis Police Department for the first time in decades. Three of the five out-of-town finalists Joel Fitzgerald, Anne Kirkpatrick and Cerelyn C.J. Davis have been fired at one time in their respective careers. Strickland did not say which out-of-town candidates were receiving extra vetting.

(WMC) - At least five people were killed, and several others hurt, in separate shootings this weekend in Memphis. It comes as the city’s top law enforcement leader prepares to step down. Director Mike Rallings spoke to WMC Action News 5 Monday afternoon. Rallings said the key to preventing violence like the kind this weekend is not just up to the police but the community. Some of the shootings, which happened in different parts of Memphis, involved multiple victims. “I think that we have a number of challenges here in Memphis,” said Rallings.

MEMPHIS, Tenn Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings, is scheduled to retire next April. “I am going to work up to my last day,” he says. But he’s in for a rough time. The murder of George Floyd, the shootings of others by police officers has changed everything. Then, toss in a pandemic, and you’ve got big problems.  “The gangs, the guns, the drugs, the domestic violence,” the Director says, has really plagued our community. And unfortunately, our community has spoke out about a lot of things, but there hasn’t been a lot of talk about violence. And to me,” Rallings says, that is what plagues Memphis.”
