The Buccaneers’ idea to sign Tom Brady all along was about a whole lot more than just putting a quarterback on the team. GM Jason Licht needed all of five words to explain that to me four days after No. 12 put pen to paper and committed to moving more than a thousand miles south.
“The standard has just risen,” he said.
The hope, Licht continued, was that Brady would bring something, and leave that something behind even after he was done playing. That the bar in Tampa would be raised, and Brady’s ways would rub off on his new teammates. That all the talent the Bucs had would be taken to another level because Brady’s way a relentless, unbending drive to win every little part of every day would become their way.

In between the ode to head coach Mike Neu and the memorials to the Cal alumni who saved the program, way back above the left-center gap, sit six numbers. After every game, those six numbers tell a story.
Those numbers, representing the hits, runs and errors of the home and visiting teams, can show so much, from the game’s winner to how each pitcher fared. Yet, they are also severely limiting, often failing to accurately portray the successes of teams and the players who field them.
The addition of more advanced analytics, dubbed sabermetrics, have allowed for a more precise way to evaluate players. These sabermetrics, which are not found on any normal box score, have the ability to look past the effects of luck or other events out of a player’s control to definitively determine how valuable one is to their team.

But as we look back on a season unlike any other in college football, right there at the top of ESPN s final 2020 power rankings once again is the Crimson Tide. Saban has won six national championships at Alabama, but only two came with unbeaten records his first one in 2009 and the one the Crimson Tide put an exclamation mark on Monday night in Miami.
