Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society and Museum restores vintage train cars

Railroading is in Mike Tilley’s blood. “My daddy used to take me over to Erwin a lot to watch trains years ago, and I just said ‘Hey, I wanna do that.’” That’s one of the reasons why, after a 40-year career with the railroad, Tilley continues to explore his interest in trains with the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society and Museum. The society repairs and restores vintage train cars, sponsors passenger excursions on them and leases them out. The society’s most recent restoration project is the 110-year-old Clinchfield 100, which served as Santa’s car on the Santa Train from the 1950s until the early 1980s.

Remembering Tilleys of Weymouth and Dorchester

At one stage the Tilleys motor business was an integral part of Weymouth and Dorchester. From a family loan the business grew and grew to eventually enjoy so much success that they had outlets and showrooms dotted throughout both towns. The firm was started by Ernest Tilley. Ernest s father was a jeweller and clockmaker. The business was first called M H Tilley & Son. Ernest died in 1946. His son John entered the business in 1936 after serving a four-year apprenticeship at the Austin Motor Company Ltd in Birmingham. John s son Mike briefly went into the family business but it was sold shortly after Mike joined it in the 1970s to Wadham Stringer.
