CHICAGO (WLS) A new effort has been spearheaded by Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL 5) to help the owners of fitness centers who have been struggling during the pandemic.
Challenges for gym owners during the pandemic have been intense. Sean Armstead, who owns Phenomenal Fitness, said at worst business was down 60% when they could be open. Then there were the three months when all gyms and fitness centers were fully shut down.
Gyms were also shut out of any substantial federal financial assistance, Armstead said. I m really disappointed at my bank, the way they haven t supported us with PPP, and we ve been with them for more than two decades but there have been other people, clients have stepped up, he said.
Last week, Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Taylorville, introduced the bill that currently has 19 bipartisan co-sponsors.
“The 1908 Springfield Race Riot Site is an important part of our nation’s history that must be recognized and preserved,” Davis said. “As one of Springfield’s representatives in Congress, this is something I’ve worked on for several years, and I’m proud to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to elevate the status of the Site further. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with lawmakers and the National Park Service to achieve this designation for the Site.”
During the riot, a mob of white residents murdered at least two Black residents, burned Black homes and businesses and attacked hundreds of people merely because of the color of their skin.

Members of the Democratic Party of Illinois State Central Committee will meet Wednesday to select the party s first new chair in more than 20 years following longtime leader and former House Speaker Michael Madigan s resignation from the role last week.
But dueling legal memos sent to committee members on Monday raised new questions about the race to lead the party just days before the scheduled vote. Download our mobile app for iOS or Android to get alerts for local breaking news and weather.
The State Central Committee consists of two members from each of Illinois 18 U.S. House districts. Each of the 36 members gets a weighted vote in the selection of the next party chair based on the number of votes cast in their district in the most recent Democratic primary election in March 2020. A candidate needs a simple majority, or 50% plus one, of the weighted vote to be elected chair.

WASHINGTON Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden said Friday he’s drafting a “plan B” to boost the federal minimum wage through the tax code since the parliamentarian shot down language included in a pandemic relief package.
The Oregon Democrat issued a statement saying his proposal would impose a 5% penalty on the payroll of “big corporations” if any of their workers “earn less than a certain amount.” The penalty would increase over time and also apply in cases where companies replace those workers with contractors, he said.
