HCA patient records being analyzed by Google in controversial deal

Credit HCA/GOOGLE (Mike Osborne) Nashville based hospital operator HCA has struck a controversial deal with Google that gives Google access to patient records from 180 plus HCA hospitals nationwide.   HCA and Google are stressing that identifying patient information will not be included in an estimated 32 million shared hospital treatment records.   The two companies say data analysis of the patient encounters will help doctors and nurses make better informed decisions about patient care.     CNBC quotes New York University ethicist Arthur Kaplan saying the deal highlights the need for the U.S. to “update our privacy protection and our informed consent requirements.”

  Rutherford County, TN On Monday, May 31, local public safety officials, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and other recovery partners continued the active investigation into an incident involving a 1982 Cessna 501 that crashed into Percy Priest Lake Saturday morning. All indications were that William J. Lara, Gwen S. Lara, Jennifer J. Martin, David L. Martin, Jessica Walters, Jonathan Walters, and Brandon Hannah all of Brentwood, Tennessee were on board the flight that originally left Smyrna airport just before 11:00 a.m. heading to Palm Beach International. After a very successful two days of recovery efforts, crews were able to locate both of the engines and a significant portion of the jet’s fuselage. Items were lifted from the waters and transported with the assistance of a crane and barge.

New book by former Tenn Gov Bill Haslam looks at faith in public square

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne) A new book by former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam went on sale Tuesday. In Faithful Presence: The Promise and the Peril of Faith in the Public Square, Haslam argues “Christians end up shaping their faith to fit their politics rather than forming their politics to their faith.” Topics address in the book include partisanship, a public servant s essential character, legislating morality, perpetual outrage, and how to think about the separation of church and state. Faithful Presence is available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online retailers.  

Tennessee falls still further behind other states in race to vaccinate against COVID-19

Credit cdc.gov (Mike Osborne)    Half of all states have vaccinated at least half of their adult populations against COVID-19, but Tennessee is not among their number. As of Tuesday morning, Tennessee has fully vaccinated just 32 percent of all adult residents. Compare that to Maine where 62 percent of residents are now fully immunized. Williamson County has one of the state’s highest vaccination rates at 43 percent. Metro Davidson County stands at 39 percent. Rutherford County has vaccinated 28 percent of eligible adults. Moore County in southern Middle Tennessee has vaccinated just 14 percent of its adult population.

GOP Leaders: Why are migrant children being flown to Tennessee in the dead of night ?

(Mike Osborne)    Tennessee’s Republican leadership is pressing the Biden Administration for answers following revelations that migrant children captured along the nation’s southern border are being flown to Tennessee. WRCB-TV says it s captured video of migrant children arriving at Chattanooga’s Wilson Air Center late at night. From there the children are loaded onto buses and reportedly driven to cities all across the Southeast. Gov. Bill Lee and the Republican members of Tennessee’s Congressional delegation are asking the White House to explain why state and local authorities were not made aware of the flights in advance.
