The Recorder - Beacon Hill Roll Call: May 3 to May 7, 2021

Beacon Hill Roll Call: May 3 to May 7, 2021 Published: 5/14/2021 2:21:02 PM There were no roll call votes in the House or Senate last week. This week, Beacon Hill Roll Call reports local representatives’ roll call attendance records for the 2021 session through May 7. The House has held 32 roll calls so far in 2021. Beacon Hill Roll Call tabulates the number of roll calls on which each representative votes and then calculates that number as a percentage of the total roll call votes held. That percentage is the number referred to as the roll call attendance record. The vast majority of the 160 representatives are not in the House chamber during a session because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sources tell Beacon Hill Roll Call that they have seen as few as 12 members in the chamber and as many as 40. The rest watch the session from their home or business and vote remotely.

Officials offer hope but few plans at Jackson crime summit

As violent crime in Jackson continues to surge, federal, state and community leaders made a promise to work together during a crime summit, but offered few tangible gains Tuesday night. Jackson City Council President Aaron Banks, who organized the summit, said the meeting was an all-hands-on-deck forum to tackle the community s surge of gun violence and present a united front moving forward. It comes as the city s homicide rate continues to surge in 2021 and is on pace to overshadow last year s historic total of 130 deaths. Nearly all of those deaths were gun-related, according to records kept by the Clarion Ledger.

The overwhelmingly white image of alcohol culture eclipses the work of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders whose influence rings through all three tiers of the system.  We have our stars: The recently retired Annette Alvarez-Peters, who moved markets from the helm of a $2 billion wine program at Costco; Alpana Singh, the youngest American woman and only South Asian to achieve the rank of Master Sommelier (which she renounced in 2020 in light of sexual harassment allegations in the organization); and Hae Un Lee, who in 1981 opened a small liquor shop in Las Vegas and grew it into the largest alcohol retailer in Nevada Lee’s Discount Liquor.

Minnesota State Mavericks Season Review

Minnesota State Mavericks Season Review Following this accomplishment, the Mavericks won their first NCAA game in school history, defeating Quinnipiac in overtime. They shut out Minnesota University in the NCAA West Final and reached the Frozen Four for the first time.  Minnesota State eventually fell to St. Cloud, as a goal late in regulation would end the Mavericks hopes of advancing. This season, filled with quarantines, uncertainty, and unprecedented success, was one for the history books. Future Minnesota State University teams will be sure to try and model this one.  The Players Photo Credit: Ashley Potts, special to The Free Press
