Leigh: Calls for war stones to be moved from the Belvedere to Strand Wharf

URGENT calls have been made to move historic stones etched with wartime messages away from an “eyesore” viewing platform, with the hope of protecting Leigh’s history. Since plans to restore the Belvedere, a century-old viewing platform were proposed around six years ago, a whole host of anti-social problems have plagued the site on Cliff Parade, including graffiti and litter such as broken glass and syringe needles. Now, Andrew Wilkins, vice chairman of Leigh Town Council, believes the best option would be to move the stones - etched with wartime messages dating as far back as 1911 - from the Belvedere to Strand Wharf.

The party sits three seats short of having full control of the council. Mr Cox said: “The polls show this administration has been rejected. Residents don’t want the Independents propping up the council any more. “They’ve made no gain, and they’ve eroded the lead they’ve had. “What’s happened is beyond our wildest dreams.”

Charles Bice, who owns the Belleville property with development partner Birck Turnbull, said despite the food hall falling through last summer, The Veil remained interested in expanding its presence in Scott’s Addition. He said The Veil is set to occupy about 8,200 square feet in the building, which is about two blocks from its current home at 1301 Roseneath Road, where it has its brewing operations and taproom.
