Residents are being warned to keep their doors and windows shut due to the blaze on Marsden Moor, Kirklees. Ten fire engines have been scrambled to the scene, near Black Moss Reservoir and Mount Road, and road closures are currently in place. The flames can be seen from many miles away, and West Yorkshire crews are receiving assistance from colleagues from Greater Manchester.  The blaze has also affected neighbouring land in Saddleworth.

Ten fire engines and several specialist units are currently battling a ferocious blaze on the moors. The fire, on Marsen Moor close to Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, broke out on Sunday evening, with fire chiefs advising residents in the area to keep their doors and windows closed. The fire is believed to have a one mile flame front and has created a lot of smoke. Crews from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are being assisted by crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, and have been battling the flames throughout the night. A spokesperson for WYFRS said: Ten pumps plus specialist wildfire units are tackling a fire with a one mile flame front on Marsden Moor.

PLUMES of smoke could be seen at sunrise as firefighters are working with crews from Greater Manchester to put out hot spots of a fire on Marsden Moor, Kirklees, this morning. The fire on Marsden Moor near Black Moss Reservoir and Swellands Reservoir started at 19:00 BST on Sunday, owner National Trust said. It has caused major damage and could have been avoided, the trust added. The blaze comes almost two years to the day since fire destroyed seven sq km (1,730 acres) of land in April 2019, which was started by a barbecue.

Fires on land at Marsden Moor continue to cause headaches for fire services. The initial fire started just after 7pm last night (Sunday) and at one point had a mile-long flame front. Ten pumps plus specialist wildfire units were dispatched to tackle the blaze, which was attended to by crews from West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. However, after damping down took place earlier today, more fire crews have been dispatched again this afternoon. A post on the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Twitter page an hour ago (4pm) read: Our crews are continuing to respond to the fire on Marsden Moor.
