Storm Yass, the first cyclone of this season in the Bay of Bengal, has intensified rapidly from a well-marked low pressure to a cyclonic storm in less than 24 hours. Cyclone Yaas amidst ongoing intensification is likely to move north-northwest towards West Bengal and Odisha coast.
The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea has launched a regional monitoring, control and surveillance center in Tema.
The facility is to address major challenges in combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the West African sub-region through enhanced regional cooperation.
Speaking at the launch, the minister for fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson lamented the incidence of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing which she said has a negative impact on fisheries resources and the loss of revenue to the country estimated at millions of US dollars.
“This loss of revenue could be used to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities and reduce poverty. I have been briefed that IUU fishing is on the rise in our sub-region due to the economic benefits gained by those involved in the act.
Moves to monitor fishing in Gulf of Guinea
May 6, 2021 Mr Seraphin Dedi
The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), an inter-governmental organisation, which focuses on the fisheries sector, has set up a Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Center (RMCSC).
This is to enable the country to effectively monitor fishing and its related activities in the Gulf of Guinea.
Scheduled to be launched on May 12, 2021, the centre among other things, would co-ordinate regional and joint operations at sea, and patrols to identify vessels operating without authorisation as well as build capacities of stakeholders in the fisheries sector.
At a COVID-safe ceremony at the FCWC Secretariat in Tema, Ghana, six laptops were provided to the FCWC to support the capture, analysis and reporting on fisheries data in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Togo.
Funded by FAO through a Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP), the initiative is part of FAO’s broader work with CECAF to support regional institutions to better transform fisheries recommendations into policy action and to improve artisanal fisheries’ data frameworks across the CECAF region.
“The provision of the devices will support beneficiary countries to capture and analyse catch data on vessels, landings sites and related fishing activities which will strengthen our understanding of capture fisheries in the region,” Ndiaga Gueye, FAO Senior Fishery and Aquaculture Officer and Secretary of CECAF, said. “With this knowledge, countries can better monitor illegal fishing and the heath of key fish stocks,” he said.
