April 25, 2021 Share The Kayes region of Western Mali is rich in resources including the precious stone mines of gold, diamond, and kimberlite. But this god-given treasure is attracting the attention of many insurgent groups operating in the Northern and Eastern regions of Mali. The region in Western Mali, Kayes, witnessed no significant tensions or attacks till 2018. But afterwards, several attacks have taken place with 4 attacks by non-state armed groups in 2020 itself. The number of attacks is significantly low compared to other parts of Mali but there is an unmistakable rise in the attacks. On 8th January 2021, Kayes witnessed a disturbing clash between unknown militants and local hunters in the region leading to 3 deaths and an equal number wounded. The attacks in the region have targeted civilians, government check posts and law enforcement authorities.
