Mayor: Do we want Idaho to be like California?

PAYETTE — As families from out of state continue moving to areas like the Western Treasure Valley, one local city official is fighting to avoid what he feels would remind them too much of their former homes. The Idaho Senate Government and Taxation Committee introduced Senate Bill 1021 on Jan. 21, a bill which purports to limit property tax increases during periods of rapid growth. With the committee working to move the bill through the Legislature, Mayor Jeff Williams is sounding the alarm for the Payette City Council to hear.  “I’ve gone to a lot of meetings with the legislators … You always hear the state people say, ‘We’re tired of the feds telling us we have to do things like this,’” Williams summarized for councilors. “Now I see that the state’s telling us how we should spend our tax dollars.”

ONTARIO Gov. Kate Brown’s mandates surrounding stopping the spread of COVID-19 have included the total shuttering of certain businesses more than once this year, or the lack to operate at full capacity. Small businesses across the state are being negatively impacted by these moves and are facing major challenges to stay in business. Some have already seen their experience ratings for workers compensation insurance go higher (as much as triple), due to layoffs that were beyond their control. In Malheur County, some businesses are taking matters into their own hands by making the difficult decision to open for business or potentially close for good.

Oregon is phasing out most uses of chlorpyrifos by the end of 2023

MALHEUR COUNTY Onion growers in Malheur County who use chlorpyrifos, a broad-spectrum insecticide, to treat their crops will soon have to find something else to use. Administrative rules filed by Oregon Department of Administration last week “significantly limits” the use of chlorpyrifos immediately and phases out nearly all use by Dec. 31, 2023. The pesticide is commonly used in the Western Treasure Valley, and one of the products it appears in is Lorsban. While it can be used in onions for controlling onion maggot, the pesticide is now more commonly used in seed crops, alfalfa, corn and other crops. While there are other insecticides available, they might not work as well and may be more expensive.
