As a youngster and teenager,
Mike Schaefer often walked across the pedestrian suspension bridge at the foot of West Spruce Street, crossing over to First Avenue in Bankers Hill. When he walked across on Tuesday, however, he was shocked to see a “Do Not Enter” sign posted at the west end of the bridge but not the east end.
Schaefer, a San Diego city councilman in the 1960s, current vice chair of the state Board of Equalization and perennial gadfly, fired off an inquiry to Mayor
Todd Gloria.
“When did this sign arise? What is the public reason for the sign: to limit (the) number of persons on (the) bridge or assure they do not bump into each other?”
