West Delaware High School returns to in-person everyday learning today.
The school moved to hybrid learning just a few weeks into the new school year last September due to the increase in COVID-19 cases throughout Delaware County. Students whose last names began with the first half of the alphabet would attend school in-person one day, while the other half learned online. The next day, they’d switch. That continued all the way through the first semester, which ended yesterday. So today, Superintendent Dr. Kristen Rickey says they’re back to normal.
And tentative plans have been made for next school year’s calendar. A public hearing on the 2021-2022 school calendar will be held at next month’s meeting – you can check it out on West Delaware website and make comments on it as well.

Funding for mental health services, additional money for schools and what to do about enrollment brought superintendents and school board members from Maquoketa Valley and West Delaware community school districts together with area legislators for a recent Zoom meeting.
Iowa Rep. Lee Hein, R-Monticello, and Iowa Sen. Dan Zumbach, R-Ryan, discussed those issues ahead of the beginning of the 2021 legislative session in Des Moines.
Both legislators agreed that the state coffers are in better shape than first thought.
âItâs not as gloomy as I thought it would be,â Zumbach said. âWe are in a position to be responsible with our budgeting and are in a position to do what we have done for the last several years, and thatâs to do education first, give it the biggest piece of the pie.â
