Bays in 2 Samar provinces, Leyte added to list of red tide positive areas
THE BUREAU of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has warned consumers against eating shellfish harvested from Daram Island and Cambatutay Bay in Western Samar, Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar, and Carigara Bay in Leyte after testing positive for red tide contamination. In its first shellfish bulletin for 2021, BFAR said these areas are the latest additions to the list of red tide positive zones in the country, which include Honda and Puerto Princesa Bays and Inner Malampaya Sound in Palawan; Milagros in Masbate; Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon; and Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol. Other areas that are affected by red tide include Tambobo Bay in Negros Oriental; Zumarraga in Western Samar; Calubian and Cancabato Bay in Leyte; Biliran Islands; Guiuan in Eastern Samar; Balite Bay in Davao Oriental; Lianga Bay and Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur; and Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur. File December 24, 2020 THE Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 465,724 coronavirus infections in the country, including 1,776 cases that were confirmed positive for Sars-CoV-2 on Thursday, December 24, 2020.
Quezon City continued to post the highest number of new cases with 128, followed by Davao City (121), Rizal (94), Western Samar (57) and Bulacan (56).
There were seven additional mortalities, raising the death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to 9,055. The case fatality rate swung back to 1.94 percent.
There were 533 more recoveries, pushing the total to 430,490, or 92.4 percent of the total case count.
The DOH said there remained 26,179 active cases in the country.
Expecting a surge in infections this Christmas season, DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III called on all accredited laboratories to stay open during the holidays.

Of the overall nationwide count, 26,179 are active cases or those who are undergoing treatment or quarantined. Of these, 81.4 percent have mild symptoms, 10.3 percent are asymptomatic, 5.2 percent are in critical condition, 2.7 percent have severe symptoms, while 0.34 percent are moderate.
The top five areas that logged the most number of new cases were Quezon City with 128, Davao City with 121, Rizal with 94, Western Samar with 57, and Bulacan with 56.
The DOH also reported 533 more survivors with recoveries rising to 430,490. However, seven more people died, bringing the death count to 9,055.
Meanwhile, DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III urged COVID-19-licensed laboratories nationwide to continue their operations during holidays and prepare for possible increase for testing demand.
