Outrage as temporary disability grants suspended

Disability activists in Makhanda have labelled the suspension of temporary disability grants as a violation of human rights.
The South African Social Security Agency has suspended temporary disability grants from the start of 2021. SASSA says the high cost involved, and the need to comply with the law, forced them into this “challenging” decision.
Temporary Disability Grants due to lapse in February 2020 were extended to 31 December 2020 because of the national coronavirus lockdown. At the end of December 2020, SASSA suspended a total of 210 778 disability grants nationally.
Explaining the decision in a statement on 7 January 2021, SASSA said temporary disability grants paid during lockdown had cost the state more than R1.5 billion. Continuing to pay them until the end of March 2021 would cost an additional R1.2 billion.

CAPE TOWN - Gift of the Givers on Saturday said it was doing everything it can to ensure Masiphumelele fire victims have food, supplies and shelter following Friday s blaze.
About 1,000 homes were destroyed, leaving thousands of people displaced.
The organisation has joined many others in efforts to provide humanitarian relief, but more assistance is needed.
Thousands of residents have been left destitute with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

CAPE TOWN - Non-profit organisation, Living Hope, has called on the public to assist residents affected by the Masiphumelele blaze.
The organisation has been collecting food, clothing and other household items to assist victims left stranded following a fire that ripped through a section of the community on Thursday.
Living Hope founder and director, John Thomas: Help is needed and goods can be dropped off at Living Hope at any time outside of curfew hours and volunteers are also needed to help.
Dr Matodsi Mukosi has been appointed the new chief executive at Tygerberg Hospital.
A new chief executive officer (CEO) has been appointed at the Western Capeâs largest hospital recently.
Tygerberg Hospital, which boasts a bed capacity of 1 384 and 4 700 staff members, recently welcomed Dr Matodsi Mukosi (51), newly appointed to take control of this important institution. He was previously the CEO of the Red Cross War Memorial Childrenâs Hospital.
Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Health, commented that she is thrilled to welcome Mukosi as the new CEO.
Dr Keith Cloete, head of the Health Department, also wished him all the best in his new role adding that they are confident he will lead the hospital through the next exciting chapter of its journey as an iconic health institution.
