Coastal News Today | CA - Erosion remains a threat to West Cliff s future

The city has now completed an exhaustive evaluation of the cliff erosion hot spots and problem areas and has developed a range of future management recommendations. This study was requested by the California Coastal Commission to deal with the many tons of rip-rap that had been placed over the year to protect the bluff under emergency permits. The next step is Coastal Commission review of the study and proposed management plan. The ongoing erosion of the bluffs and efforts to protect them from wave attack is clear to anyone who frequents West Cliff Drive. What to do about this continuing retreat is less clear. From the end of Bay Street to Natural Bridges, West Cliff belongs to the people and lots of public input has been collected during the erosion and management study.

Letter: Council need to support ambitious Eden Portland project

I VE just sent this to Cllr Ferrari of Dorset Council, and the MP whose support is vital: I strongly urge Dorset Council to seek funding for the Eden Portland project. This remarkable scheme has already passed major hurdles with flying colours. Exciting is a much-used word, but in this context that is certainly what Eden Portland is. I ask that the council takes the full opportunity to support it by applying for the maximum from the Levelling-Up Fund. No over-cautious or half-hearted approach would convey its potential importance to an area far beyond Portland. It cannot be right that the LG reorganisation has resulted in Portland and Weymouth being drawn into Dorset s Tier 3 priority, whereas the former W&P Borough with its pockets of high deprivation would have put us in the highest Priority 1. I hope this will be argued vigorously as it is a special case.

We are not Blackpool or Scarborough : Zip wire fear for Whitby

FEARS have been raised that a proposal to install two 300 metre zip wires from the cliffs at Whitby down to its pier could turn the popular resort into “Blackpool”. The two zip lines which would take thrillseekers down from the Whitby Pavilion car park to the lighthouse on the West Pier have been suggested by a company called Big Bang Promotions. The Barnsley-based outfit has approached Scarborough Council about its plan to install two lines in time for the summer season when the coronavirus restrictions are lifted. In documents sent to the council, seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the company stated: “The proposal would be to create a ‘pop up’ destination attraction for the summer of 2021 between the dates of 23 June and 5 September.

Honouring Whitby s first female skipper Dora Walker who went to sea with a pistol with on her hip and an Army issue tin hat

Submitting. More than three decades after her death, Whitby Civic Society is to remember skipper Dora Walker, author and museum curator, with a blue plaque to honour her remarkable feats. Photographs of Dora Walker from the Frank Meadow Sutcliffe collection, courtesy of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society and the Whitby Museum. Here was someone who wouldn t be told a woman s place , said the shipping curator at Whitby Museum, Dennis Buck, and for that she should be admired. The more we delve into Dora Walker s life, the more remarkable she seems, said Mr Buck. There s this image of her fishing, pistol on her hip, throwing lobster pots. And then there s this image of this beautifully dressed lady, for she was a lady. She was both.
