PAUL GARBER/WFDD Wake Forest University is renaming one of its campus buildings as part of a review of its history as the university seeks a more inclusive view of its past. Wake Forest President Nathan Hatch announced last week that Wingate Hall will no longer carry the name of the university’s fourth president, Washington Manly Wingate, who served terms both before and after the Civil War.

Brackets Announced For SoCon Softball Tournament Mocs Are Number Three Seed, Open Against No. 2 Western Carolina Sunday, May 9, 2021 The Southern Conference has announced the seeding for the 2021 SoCon Softball Championship, which begins Thursday, May 13, at UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina. The four-team tournament is slated for May 13-15.   Regular-season champion UNCG (31-15, 14-4 SoCon), the coaches preseason pick to win the league, is the tournament’s top seed for the third consecutive tournament. The Spartans needed to sweep Western Carolina this weekend to earn the top seed and they did so with a pair of 9-1 wins on Saturday and a 5-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

Two Cabarrus County students named finalists for Blumey Awards

Two Cabarrus County Schools students — Hickory Ridge’s Bryson Battle and Northwest Cabarrus’s Cameron Meyer — are finalists this year for Best Actor in the annual Blumey Awards. The Blumey Awards are put on every year by Blumenthal Performing Arts and aim to continue the celebration of high school musical theater. Battle and Meyer will compete with four other actors for the Best Actor Award in a 30-minute program airing on PBS Charlotte on May 25 at 8 p.m. The winner of that event will move on to the National High School Musical Theater Awards on July 15. Ian Sullivan and Andrea Rassler have worked with their students respectively since their freshmen years and seeing their hard work culminate in Blumey Award nominations has been special for them.
