For years, many of Buffalo’s iconic buildings have been demolished, some for major new structures and some for parking lots. Now the Common Council has changed the rules for those demolitions.
With major city developments in recent years, there have been some real battles between developers and preservationists over projects. That’s particularly true in the Elmwood Village, where preservationists have battled to save buildings and struggled with restrictive time limits on blocking demolitions.
Council Majority Leader David Rivera said a battle over a home on West Utica demolished for the Elmwood Crossing project led to the new rules.

Three Utica residents face felony weapon charges following a vehicle stop in West Utica, city police said.
At about 10:50 p.m. Thursday, GIVE Strike Team members, working in conjunction with New York State Parole officers, attempted to stop a grey Jeep Cherokee on Schuyler Street, officials said.
Upon attempting to stop it, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed through West Utica. Ultimately, the vehicle stopped on a dead end street on the 1200 block of Butternut Avenue, and three people fled from the vehicle, police said.
The individuals were apprehended a short distance away.
As the officers backtracked the area of the pursuit, they found a loaded .40-caliber Glock handgun, police said.
