Overriding the governor’s veto of H.B. 732 (2020), the Maryland Senate on February 12, 2021 passed the nation’s first state tax on the digital advertising revenues pulled in by large companies. This development follows attempts by various other states like New York to directly regulate digital advertising and ecommerce services in new ways. We took a look at the Maryland bill to find out what advertisers need to know about its details and potential pitfalls.

Federal and State Legislators Introduce Medical Debt Bills
Federal bill reintroduced in 117th Congress would impede hospitals’ ability to collect. Maryland and New Mexico also consider medical debt legislation.

Democratic senators have reintroduced legislation to prevent health care providers from actions such as wage garnishment in connection with unpaid medical debts.
It is among several proposals on medical debt collections introduced at the state and federal level this year.
Suspend all extraordinary collection actions by health care providers for all medical debt (e.g. wage garnishment, bank account seizure) during the covered period (i.e. from Feb. 1, 2020, until the end of the public health emergency or 18 months after enactment of this bill).

Biden appoints Silver Spring brewery owner to Small Business Administration
Julie Verratti, co-founder and chief brand officer of Denizens Brewing Co., has been appointed to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
She will fill be associate administrator of field operations, leading the SBA’s 68 field offices and 10 regional offices. The Office of Field Operations oversees the agency’s products and services.
