The public is being asked for its thoughts as the Southwest Michigan Local Food Council develops a food branding campaign for the area. The council’s Dawn Marie Smith tells WSJM News a USDA grant is paying for the development of that brand to promote the unique qualities of southwest Michigan food and agriculture. She says the area truly is unique.
“It really comes down to the science,” Smith said. “The climate, geography, and the thousands of years of getting to this place now where we have this ability to grow great tasting foods. Little known science facts such as the glaciers, the soil, the nutrients in the soil, the minerals. We know from public opinion that quality and taste are really important, so we’re living in this geographical wonder.”
